The Power of Giving  2011 GA edition

Dear Readers,
Every year, the movers and shakers of the
organized Jewish world convene for three intensive
days during the General Assembly of the Jewish
Federations of North America. This annual event is
an opportunity for leaders of Jewish organizations
and institutions to engage in dialogue and share
their experiences as well as their visions and hopes
for the future.
The themes and issues which reverberate
throughout each GA, both in the formal events
and in more informal gatherings, invariably reflect
the subjects which are most pressing at that given
point in time. As such, the participants of this year’s
GA in Denver, Colorado will undoubtedly be
discussing the need to reach out to the increasingly
large proportion of American Jews who are
distancing themselves from their heritage, as well
as the need to redefine and inject new meaning
into the relationship between Israel and the Jews
of the Diaspora. In this context, special efforts are
being devoted to encouraging American Jews to
visit Israel on a variety of programs, since these
experiences have been proven to have a significant
long-term impact on Jewish identity, especially for
teens and young adults.
This issue of “The Power of Giving” provides a
snapshot of all these concerns which occupy the
world of Jewish philanthropy today. We invite you
to learn about a wide range of admirable entities,
including organizers of Israel programs, academic
institutions and non-profits serving disadvantaged
populations such as Ethiopian-Israelis, Holocaust
survivors, children with cancer and others.

With best wishes for a productive event,

The Power of Giving כוחה של נתינה פסח 2009
The power of giving, special Passover edition with leading Israeli nonprofit organizations

Dear Readers,

It is no secret that these are tough times. On the

one hand, the global economic crisis means that an

unprecedented number of people are unable to afford the

medical treatments they require or the extra help their

disabled children need or even the basic cost of a dignified

life. On the other hand, the ‘third sector’ – consisting of

the non-profit organizations which are selflessly dedicated

to improving society and helping those who are most

in need – has been badly hit by the sudden downturn in

philanthropic giving around the world. Despite this bleak

reality, most of these non-profits are determined to continue

fighting for the causes they so fervently support, realizing

that now, more than ever, their endeavors are vital.

In this issue of The Power of Giving, we have

showcased non-profit organizations which are confronting

the current social and economic conditions head-on and

are nevertheless pursuing their praiseworthy undertakings.

May they be an inspiration to us all.

Wishing you a Happy Passover,

Rebecca Kopans
